Admitted Student Guide

preparing to join the ODU community

Your commitment to learning has been rewarded with admission into Old Dominion University. Now is the time to start planning and making arrangements for an exciting experience.

An additional guide is available for Distance Learning students.

Learn your UIN

The first thing you should do is become familiar with your University Identification Number (UIN).

It is important to know this number because you will use it often for enrollment, class registration, payments and other student activities.

Memorizing this number will make your transition to college much easier.

Activate Email Address

Now that you are a Monarch, you need to activate your e-mail account. From this point on, you will be receiving important communication via this account.

  1. Go to https://midas.odu.edu/.
  2. Click Activate MIDAS ID
  3. Proceed as instructed using your University Identification Number (UIN) for your Student ID.

Financial Aid/Scholarships

Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible for federal financial aid. The priority deadline for the FAFSA is February 15.

ODU FAFSA code: 003728

If you have any financial aid questions, please call (757) 683-3683, email or read more information at the Office of Financial Aid.

Notify the Office of Financial Aid if you are receiving any outside agency scholarships, grants or loans.

Freshman Acceptance/Deposit (fall freshman only)

To reserve your spot in the freshman class, pay your non-refundable $200 freshmen deposit.

This may be done online or you may PDF print the form out (59 KB) and mail it to the Office of Admissions.

Reserve Housing

Visit The Office of Housing and Residence Life to submit your online application for on-campus housing.

Learn more about the various housing options available to first-year students and be prepared to rank your choices on the application.

On-campus housing is in high demand so remember to apply early!

Parents incoming students are encouraged to sign up for an e-newsletter and keep up-to-date on the services and programs offered by the Office of Housing and Residence Life.

Resources

Register for Orientation

Orientation/PREVIEW registration begins in mid-March 2009 for those students who will be entering in Fall 2009. Check the schedule for a convenient date.

During this event, students will familiarize themselves with ODU, meet with academic advisors and register for classes.

All new undergraduate students (Freshman and Transfer) intending to major within the College of Business Public Administration(CBPA) must attend PREVIEW.

* Applies to students attending the main campus, Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, Peninsula Higher Education Center, or Tri-Cities Higher Education Center.

Health Records

Complete and turn in your health forms to Student Health Services.

AP/IB and Dual Enrollment Credit Evaluation

You have access to view your credits (dual-enrollment, transfer, military, AP, IB, CLEP and DANTES) online using LEO Online. If you feel that you have not properly received credit, please contact the Office of Admissions.

Additionally, Monarch TRANSFERmation is available to see how credits will transfer from other institutions.

Be sure to submit your official transcripts from all institutions and official test scores for which you are seeking credit.

Course abbreviations used on the credit evaluation are defined in the University Catalog. Catalogs can be obtained in several ways:

Honors College (Optional)

With an emphasis on innovative teaching and small classes, the Honors College offers the experience of a small liberal arts college within a large university setting for students in any major. The Honors College is a four-year program in which select incoming freshmen, current sophomores and transfer students enjoy low-enrollment general education courses designed exclusively for them.

Submit your Honors College application online. An additional essay is required to apply for the program and is submitted with the online application.

Purchasing Books

If you are a main campus student, books can be purchased from the University Bookstore.

If you are a student at an ODU Higher Education Center, your books will be available for purchase at the Center several weeks before classes begin.

If you are a distance student, you will order your books from ODU Express.

Parking

As of the 2009-10 school year, freshman residential students will no longer be permitted to bring cars to campus. This policy does not apply to non-traditional freshmen (freshmen who have been out of high school for two years or more) or freshman students who will be commuting to campus. Waivers will be granted to those students who can demonstrate a need to bring a vehicle with them to campus.

Information on waivers can be obtained from the Office of Housing and Residence Life at freshmanparkingwaiver@odu.edu.

Current rates are available from the Office of Parking and Transportation Services

Final Grades

Make sure to submit your final official transcripts to us. Failure to satisfactorily complete the academic term or year or substantial changes in your academic grade point average may result in a change in your admission status.

Continue to work hard even after being admitted.
